Concept Map
About
This concept map was completed in the STICU at IMC in Murray, Utah during a critical care rotation. It serves as the best example of my critical and clinical thought process regarding a patient’s disease state. Note the color coding that categorizes each item within a problem.
During my time at Westminster College I completed 36 clinical rotations in my first three semesters, then 18 shifts at my capstone in the SLC VA ICU. As a student I rotated through the NICU, ICU, Neuro ICU, CV ICU, Shock Trauma ICU, PICU, Neuro Acute Care, E.P. Lab, OR, PACU, and home and hospice care. All together, my clinicals and capstone count for 648 clinical hours. This is in addition to my 400 clinical hours with the VALOR program I have completed at the VA. I have had the opportunity through Westminster for a clinical experience that has been varied and unique. To gain further insight into my clinical accomplishments please visit my Work Experience page or Education page.

Teaching Presentation
About
This is a brochure I designed for new mothers learning about breast feeding. This serves as an example of my communication and patient education ability. Teaching is an important aspect of nursing service I am passionate about providing to my patients. Patients should leave the hospital feeling more confident about their condition and better prepared to manage their health.

College Wide
Learning Goals
1
Critical, analytical, and integrative thinking
The following concept map exemplifies critical thinking in that I have taken raw information about the patient and linked that information to show a clear disease process of leukemia and its treatment impacts on the body. I have analyzed this information and created a problem list showing the most pressing priorities. I have integrated this with my nursing education by providing 5 means of addressing each problem.
2
Creative and reflective capacities
The following presentation is a community assessment of Heber Valley, Utah. It illustrates creativity through my gathering of information and presentation in a logical and visually pleasing way. Furthermore, I have included a voiceover for each slide to further inform the viewer of the results of my community assessment.
I drew upon primary and secondary sources in my completion of this project, reflecting upon my own schooling and in person survey of the city to complete the presentation.
3
Leadership, collaboration, and teamwork
In this research project, I worked as a member of a three person team to gain evidence based insight into whether or not nursing retention is related to nurse-to-patient ratios.
As a member of a team, I completed the portion of the assignment that was my responsibility - completing the discussion, implications, and recommendations. I collaborated with my peers finding sources and determining the overall trajectory of our project. As a leader in this project, I directed the final assembly of the information into a cohesive and informative poster board.
4
Writing and other communications skills
This example of my writing demonstrates my ability to communicate clearly and concisely, especially about delicate topics.
This clip of a writing assignment discusses the topics of right and wrong under two different philosophical umbrellas. It includes a delicate discussion on a sensitive topic. In nursing, sensitive discussions are everyday occurrences that I am prepared to engage in.
5
Global consciousness, social responsibility, and ethical awareness
As a nurse, possessing global consciousness, understanding social responsibility, and being ethically aware are key aspects to providing just care.
The following segment of my writing illustrates these qualities. Herein I make clear that I understand the ethical duties of a healthcare provider through discussion of a nurse’s duty to protect a patient’s autonomy as a primary ethical concern. It is also clear, within this example, that I am socially responsible to serve patients justly and act to the full extent of my scope to protect life until that action is at odds with a patient’s wishes.
All of this occurs within the scope of global consciousness and awareness that different cultures have different norms, rules, and desires when it comes to healthcare. By protecting patient autonomy, I can respect different cultures and seek out awareness of their practices.
